FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with an IEC Publication.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.

INTRODUCTION
This first edition of IEC 62386-203 is published in conjunction with IEC 62386-101 and
IEC 62386-102. The division of IEC 62386 into separately published parts provides for ease
of future amendments and revisions. Additional requirements will be added as and when a
need for them is recognised.
This International Standard, and the other parts that make up the IEC 62386-200 series, in
referring to any of the clauses of IEC 62386-101 or IEC 62386-102, specify the extent to
which such a clause is applicable and the order in which the tests are to be performed. The
parts also include additional requirements, as necessary. All parts which make up the
IEC 62386-200 series are self-contained and therefore do not include references to each
other.
Where the requirements of any of the clauses of IEC 62386-101 or IEC 62386-102 are
referred to in this International Standard by the sentence "The requirements of IEC 62386-
1XX, clause ’n’ apply”, this sentence is to be interpreted as meaning that all requirements of
the clause in question of Part 101 or Part 102 apply, except any which are clearly inapplicable
to the specific type of lamp control gear covered by Part 203.
All numbers used in this International Standard are decimal numbers unless otherwise noted.
Hexadecimal numbers are given in the format 0xVV, where VV is the value. Binary numbers
are given in the format XXXXXXXXb or in the format XXXX XXXX, where X is 0 or 1; 'x' in
binary numbers means 'don't care'.

Command 241: YAAA AAA1 1111 0001 ‘QUERY THERMAL LOAD’
Answer shall be the actual thermal load as an 8-bit number. The thermal load is a percentage
in the range from 0 % to 127,5 % with a 0,5 % resolution. A value of 255 means a
temperature load of 127,5 % or above.
This is an optional feature. If this feature is not implemented the control gear shall not react in
any way.
NOTE A value of 0 implies no thermal load, also equivalent to the load being at normal ambient temperature or
lower when switched off. A value of 100 % corresponds to control gear temperature consistent with achieving the
lifetime stated in the installation leaflet or manual. Tolerances can be specified only by the manufacturer.
Command 242: YAAA AAA1 1111 0010 ‘QUERY THERMAL OVERLOAD TIME HB’
Answer shall be the high byte (HHHH HHHHb) of the over-temperature time.
The low byte of the over-temperature time shall be transferred to DTR1.
---------------------- Page: 16 ----------------------
SIST EN 62386-203:2009

any way.
The combination of the two bytes (HHHHHHHHLLLLLLLLb) from command 242 and 243 shall
represent the 16-bit over-temperature time in units of 15 min. This is a cumulative value and
cannot be reset. If the 16-bit representation reaches the highest possible value of 65535
(0xFFFF) the over-temperature time is 16 383 h and 45 min or above. Over-temperature is
defined as: ‘thermal load of 100,5 % or above (see command 241).
Commands 244 - 247: YAAA AAA1 1111 01XX
Reserved for future needs. The control gear shall not react in any way.
