BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 162, Location of Recording Heads for Three Magnetic
Sound Records on 35 mm Film and One Magnetic Sound Record on 17.5 mm Film, was drawn
up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 36, Cinematography, the Secretariat of which is held by
the American Standards Association, Inc. (ASA).
During its first meeting, held in New York, in June 1952, the Technical Committee
turned over to its Secretariat the study of a draft proposal for an IS0 Recommendation
drawn up as recommended by the Working Group No. 4, Dimensions and Locations for
Sound Records on the basis of the American Standard PH22.86-1953 (Dimensions of
sound records on 35 mm and 17.5 mm motion picture film).
This draft proposal was submitted, in September 1954, to the Technical Committee
for adoption, and in December 1954 to the IS0 Member Bodies for approval.
O
At the second meeting of ISO/TC 36, held in Stockholm, in June 1955, it was unanim-
ously decided, in the light of certain observations put forward by the Working Group, to
have the Secretariat undertake the study of a new draft proposal to take the place of the
first one.
In October 1955, this second draft proposal was presented to the members of the
Technical Committee; it was recast by the Secretariat to incorporate a number of substan-
tially similar observations made by France, Sweden, the U.S.S.R. and the United Kingdom:
when submitted in this modified form to the members of the Technical Committee ISO/TC 36
for their approval, it was adopted as a Draft IS0 Recommendation.
On 27 December 1957, the Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 199) was distributed to
all the IS0 Member Bodies and was approved, subject to some modifications, by the
following Member Bodies :
Belgium Germany Rumania
Bulgaria Hungary Sweden
Switzerland
Burma Italy
O
Canada Japan United Kingdom
Czechoslovakia New Zealand U.S.A.
France Portugal U.S.S.R.
No Member Body opposed the approval of the Draft.
The Draft IS0 Recommendation was then submitted by correspondence to the IS0
Council, which decided, in July 1960, to accept it a9 an IS0 RECOMMENbATION.

the two systems. The advantage of round numbers in both systems Justifies the differences.
