BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 169, Sizes of Photocopies (on Paper) Readable Without
Optical Devices, was drawn up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 46, Documentation, the Secre-
tariat of which is held by the Nederlands Instituut voor Documentatie en Registratuur (NIDER)
on behalf of the Stichting Nederlands Normalisatie-instituut
From the time of its creation, the Technical Committee included in its programme of work
the study of the subject matter of the present recommendation and, in 1947, prepared a draft
proposal bearing the title “Photographic Reproduction of Documents on Paper. Photocopy.
Sizes”. This document was based on a draft previously established by the former International
Federation of the National Standardizing Associations (ISA). This draft proposal was sub-
mitted to Member Bodies for consideration before being discussed during the first meeting of
Technical Committee ISO/TC 46, held in The Hague, in June 1948. During this meeting it
was decided to modify the draft propo$al in certain respects.
During the second meeting of the Technical Committee, held in Ascona, in April 1950,
the draft proposal, modified as agreed, was discussed again, and it was decided to consult the
Technical Committee ISO/TC 6, Paper, regarding the tolerances to allow for these papers. The
Secretariat of ISO/TC 6 asked its meabers to answer a questionnaire on the subject and trans-
mitted its conclusions to the ISO/TC 46 Secretariat in order to enable it to decide finally the
maximum acceptable tolerances.
These conclusions were submitted to Technical Committee ISO/TC 46, during its third
meeting, held in Rome in September l951. The Technical Committee decided then to request
in Paris,
its Sub-Committee ISO/TC 46/SC1 to re-examine the question. During its meeting, held
in April 1952, this Sub-Committee deuided to prepare two series of tolerances corresponding to
two groups of needs.
The Sub-Committee proposal was circulated for final approval to the members of ISO/TC 46
at the fourth meeting held in Copenhqgen, in October 1952. S
