BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 153, Ordinary Glasses for Scuttles and Lights - Dimensions,
was drawn up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 8, Shipbuilding Details, the Secretariat of which
is held by the Stichting Nederlands Normalisatie-instituut ("1).
At its first meeting, held in Paris, in June 1949, the Technical Committee ISO/TC 8,
unanimously decided to adopt as a basis for discussion the ISA Bulletin 17, item 1, published in
1938 by the former International Federation of the National Standardizing Associations (ISA).
This ISA Bulletin was for the greater part accepted as to nominal diameters, effective diameters
and tolerances for glasses. The number of thicknesses of glasses was extended by certain values.
As a result of the discussions at the first meeting of the Technical Committee ISO/TC 8,
held in Paris, in June 1949 and at the third meeting, held in Genoa, in November 1956, four
draft proposals were set up, of which the last one dated July 1958, was unanimously accepted
by the Technical Committee.
The same ISA Bulletin 17, item 1, was originally discussed at the first meeting of the former
Technical Committee TC 9, Inland Navigation, held in Paris, in June 1949, where it was decided
to follow the proceedings of ISO/TC 8 with regard to this subject.
The last proposal of ISO/TC 8, in July 1958, received full agreement of all members of
ISO/TC 9 and was adopted as a Draft IS0 Recommendation.
On 4 December 1958, the Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 262) was distributed to all
the IS0 Member Bodies and was approved, subject to some amendments, by the following
