BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 219, Common Names for Pesticides - Second List, was
drawn up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 81, Common Names for Pesticides, the Secretariat
of which is held by the British Standards Institution (B.S.I.).
Work on this question by the Technical Committee began in 1955 and led in 1957 to the
adoption of a Draft IS0 Recommendation.
In May 1959, this Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 284) was circulated to all the IS0
Member Bodies for enquiry. It was approved, subject to a few amendments, by the following
Member Bodies :
Australia Greece New Zealand
Austria Hungary Portugal
Canada India Sweden
Czechoslovakia Italy Republic of South Africa
France Japan United Kingdom
Germany Netherlands U.S.S.R.
One Member Body opposed the approval of the Draft: U.S.A.
The Draft IS0 Recommendation was then submitted by correspondence to the IS0
Council, which decided, in November 1961, to accept it as an IS0 RECOMMENDATION.

COMMON NAMES FOR PESTICIDES
SECOND LIST *
INTRODUCTION
This IS0 Recommendation gives the second list of common names approved by Technical
Committee ISO/TC 81, Comrnoiz nu me.^ for Pesticides, for certain pesticides of international
importance. The chemical name in conformity with the rules of the International Union of
Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) is given in each case. Where the interpretations of the
rules of IUPAC by the Chemical Society, London, and the American Chemical Society, New
York, differ, both versions are given. That of the Chemical Society is indicated by an asterisk (*),
that of the American Chemical Society by a dagger (t). Chemical formulae and notes concerning
some of the names are given. The application of each compound is given in a separate column
according to the following classes :
A Insecticides or acaricides
B Fungicides
C Herbicides
D Rodenticides
It is proposed in due course to issue further IS0 Recommendations for approved common
names. In some cases, widely used names are not available for international use at the present
time, because they are protected by trade marks in certain countries.
* The first list constitutes the subject-matter of ISO/R 116.
