BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 290, Common Names for Pesticides-Fourth List, was drawn
up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 81, Conimon Names for Pesticides, the Secretariat of which
is held by the British Standards Institution (B.S.I.).
Work on this question by the Technical Committee began in 1959 and led, in 1960, to the
adoption of a Draft IS0 Recommendation.
In October 1960, this Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 412) was circulated to all the IS0
Member Bodies for enquiry. It was approved, subject to a few amendments, by the following
Member Bodies :
Austria Germany New Zealand
Belgium Greece Poland
Brazil
Hungary Spain
Canada India Sweden
Chile Iran Turkey
Czechoslovakia Israel United Kingdom
Denmark
Italy U.S.S.R.
Two Member Bodies opposed the approval of the Draft:
France, Republic of South Africa.
The Draft IS0 Recommendation was then submitted by correspondence to the IS0 Council,
which decided, in January 1963, to accept it as an IS0 RECOMMENDATION.

IS0 Recommendation January 1963
COMMON NAMES FOR PESTICIDES
FOURTH LIST*
FOREWORD
This IS0 Recommendation gives the fourth list of common names approved by Technical
Committee ISO/TC 8 1, Comn?on Names ,for Pesticides, for certain pesticides of international
importance. The chemical name in conformity with the rules of the International Union of Pure
and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) is given in each case. Where the interpretations of the rules
of IUPAC by The Chemical Society, London, and the American Chemical Society, New York,
differ, both versions are given. That of The Chemical Society is indicated by an asterisk (*), that
of the American Chemical Society by a dagger (t). Chemical formulae and notes concerning
some of the names are given. The application of each compound is given in a separate column
according to the following classes :
A Insecticides or acaricides
B Fungicides
C Herbicides
D Rodenticides
It is proposed in due course to issue further IS0 Recommendations for approved common
names. In some cases, widely used names are not available for international use at the present
time, because they are protected by trade marks in certain countries.
* The foregoing lists constitute the subject-matter of the following IS0 Recommendations:
R 116, Common Numes fur Pesticides. First List,
R 219, Common Numes /or Pesticides. Second List,
R 258, Common Names for Pesticides. Third List.
