1 Scope
The purpose of this document is to provide the principles and guidance for the preparation of
extended application documents for penetration sealing systems tested in accordance with
prEN 1366-3. The field of the extended application document is additional to the direct field of
application given within prEN 1366-3 and may be applied to or based on a single test, or a number of
tests, which provide the relevant information for the formulation of an extended application.
2 Normative references
The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated
references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced
document (including any amendments) applies.

EN 1363-1, Fire resistance tests — Part 1: General requirements
EN 1363-2, Fire resistance tests — Part 2: Alternative and additional procedures
EN 1366-3, Fire resistance tests for service installations — Part 3: Penetration seals
EN 13501-1, Fire classification of construction products and building elements —
Part 1: Classification using test data from reaction to fire tests
EN 13501-2, Fire classification of construction products and building elements —

systems)

3 Definitions
For the purposes of this document the definitions given in EN 1363-1 and 2, EN1366-3, EN 13501-1,
EN 13501-2 and EN ISO 13943, together with the following, apply:

3.1
pre-insulated pipes
pipes where the applied insulation passes through the seal
3.2
post-insulated pipes
pipes where the applied insulation does not pass through the seal
3.3
seal depth
the shortest distance between the exposed and unexposed surfaces of the seal
3.4
seal thickness
the shortest distance between the surface of the service and the surrounding aperture

3.5
pipe diameter
the nominal external diameter of the service pipe.

4 Extended application principles
Due to the diverse nature of materials and constructions used to seal openings in fire resistant
separating elements it has been necessary to separate the extended application principles into
generic seal types. Principles common to all generic seal types are given in Section 4.1. Principles
and guidance relating to each specific generic seal type are given in annex A to this document.
Annex B provides guidance on the application of test results on plastic pipe seals.
Variables for each seal type, which require consideration, are included in this report. These are as
follows:
⎯ Separating element.
⎯ Type of service.
⎯ Size of service
⎯ Seal size and configuration.
Each section gives the possible variation, the expected effect and a comment on that effect. The
effects are annotated as + (a positive effect expected), - (a negative effect expected) or = (no
significant effect expected). Where no annotation of effect is given the comments are considered as
guidance.
Calculations can be used to determine the heat transfer and temperature increase along metallic
pipes, providing that the heat transfer within the pipe is taken into account.
At present this document only considers the effect of one variation at a time, all other parameters
remaining unchanged.
Where more than one variation is to be incorporated the overall effect must be considered.
4.1 General
The guidance given in this section is applicable to all generic penetration seal types incorporated in
annex A, unless stated otherwise in the specific section.
Seal material (primary generic penetration seal material as per Annex A)
Variation Effect Comment
Change of material(s) - Not acceptable.

Backing material (where required)
This section relates to the change of material only used to back a mastic/sealant, elastomer or gel
when used as part of a penetration seal
Backing material Effect Comment
Polyethylene = or + May be replaced by glass wool, stone wool or
ceramic wool
Glass wool = or + May be replaced by stone wool or ceramic
wool
Stone wool = or + May be replaced by ceramic wool
Ceramic wool (including = May only be replaced by alternative material of
ceramic alternatives) equivalent material properties, e.g. density,
thermal conductivity, melting point, shrinkage,
reaction to fire classification – for example
alkaline earth silicate fibres

Separating elements — Concrete or masonry
Variation Effect Comment
Decrease in thickness - Not acceptable
and/or density

Separating elements – Flexible constructions
Variation Effect Comment
Decrease in thickness - Not acceptable.
Increase in thickness = or + Acceptable.
Non standard elements Constructions not defined in EN 1366-3 must
be tested.
Change of linings = Acceptable for the constructions given in EN
1366-3 if the linings have an equivalent or
greater thickness and the construction
(horizontal or vertical) has an equivalent or
greater fire resistance.
Change in aperture framing - Not acceptable.
Change (density, thickness - Not acceptable.

Penetrating services — Changes to service items — Metal pipes
Variation Effect Comment
Change of type of pipe = Acceptable provided melting point is equal to

Decrease in nominal pipe - Not acceptable.
wall thickness.
Insulated pipes Data relating to insulated pipes cannot be
used to support assessments in respect of
uninsulated pipes and vice versa.
Change of insulation For pre-insulated pipes a change of insulation
material. material is not acceptable. For post-insulated
pipes insulation material may be changed
within the same generic type, such as rock
fibre, glass wools, PVC’s etc where the
alternative provides an equivalent or greater
reaction to fire classification.
Change in thickness and/or - Not acceptable.
