FOREWORD
1) Th e International El ectrotechnical Commission (IEC) i s a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
al l national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co -operation on all questions c oncerning standardization i n the el ectrical and el ectronic fi elds. To this end and
i n addition to other ac tivities, IEC p ublishes International Standards, T echnical Specifications, T echnical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
p reparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may p articipate in this p reparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
wi th the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Stan dardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) Th e formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all

This second edition, which gives the fundamental terms and definitions concerning protection
against electric shock, cancels and replaces the first edition of IEC 60050-195:1998 and
IEC 60050-195:1998/AMD1:2001. The d o cument constitutes a technical revision and takes into
account IEC 61140:2016 f ro m which related entries have b een ad d ed. New entries have b een
added at the end of the respective section. Concepts considered to be no longer appropriate
f o r inclusion have b een deleted.
It has the status o f a ho rizo ntal publication in accordance with IEC Guide 108.

de l'ensemble des comités électrotechniques nationaux (Comités nationaux de l 'IEC). L'IEC a pour objet de
