Foreword
This Interim European Telecommunication Standard (I-ETS) has been produced by the Signalling
Protocols and Switching (SPS) Technical Committee of the European Telecommunications Standards
Institute (ETSI), based upon the layer 3 Abstract Test Suite (ATS) developed by the Conformance Test
Specification (CTS2) ISDN project.
An ETSI standard may be given I-ETS status either because it is regarded as a provisional solution ahead
of a more advanced standard, or because it is immature and requires a "trial period". The life of an I-ETS
is limited to three years after which it can be converted into an ETS, have it's life extended for a further
two years, be replaced by a new version or, be withdrawn.
This I-ETS forms part of a set of I-ETSs completing the documentation of ETS 300 102-1 (ISDN signalling
network layer protocol) as specified in ISO/IEC 9646-1 (e.g. conformance testing) as follows:
I-ETS 300 314: "Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) proforma
specification (basic access, user)";
I-ETS 300 315: "PICS proforma specification (primary rate access, user)";
I-ETS 300 316: "PICS proforma specification (basic access, network)";
I-ETS 300 317: "PICS proforma specification (primary rate access, network)";
I-ETS 300 318: "Partial Protocol Implementation eXtra Information for Testing (PIXIT) proforma
specification (basic access, user)";
I-ETS 300 319: "Partial PIXIT proforma specification (primary rate access, user)";
I-ETS 300 322: "Abstract test suite specification (user)".
This I-ETS presents the Abstract Test Suite (ATS) for the user-network interface layer 3 specification for
basic call control described in Tree and Tabular Combined Notation (TTCN) for an ISDN user side
terminal equipment using ISDN basic or primary rate access. This test suite aligns with the principles
defined in Open Systems Integration (OSI) conformance testing methodology and framework
(ISO/IEC 9646-3) using the remote single layer test methodology.
This ATS is specified for both the basic and primary rate access. It is based on the protocol standard
ETS 300 102 and references Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) proforma
specifications I-ETS 300 314 and I-ETS 300 315 and partial Protocol Implementation eXtra Information for
Testing (PIXIT) proforma specifications I-ETS 300 318 and I-ETS 300 319.
The ATS TTCN Graphical Representation (GR) is contained in annexes A and B of this I-ETS. The
identification of the associated Machine Processable (MP) files is contained in annex C of this I-ETS.

1 Scope
This Interim European Telecommunication Standard (I-ETS) specifies the Abstract Test Suite (ATS)
required to check for full conformance to the stage three of circuit-mode on-demand basic
telecommunication services for the pan-European Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) as provided
by European telecommunications operators at the T reference point or coincident S and T reference
points as defined in ITU-T Recommendation I.411 [13] by means of the Digital Subscriber Signalling
System No. one (DSS1).
In addition, the ATS contained in this I-ETS specifies the conformance tests for the protocol requirements
at the T reference point where the service is provided to the user via a private ISDN.
The ATS is specified for both the basic and primary rate access and is based on the protocol as specified
in ETS 300 102-1 [1].
This I-ETS is applicable to a terminal equipment representing a Terminal Equipment type 1 (TE1),
Terminal Adaptor (TA) or Network Termination type 2 (NT2) functional entity.

5 Introduction to the ATS
This ATS defines the test specification for the ISDN DSS1 layer 3 protocol (ETS 300 102-1 [1]) and is
presented as tables in the form of Tree and Tabular Combined Notation (TTCN) tables.
In order for a test laboratory to perform a test campaign based on the ATS, the apparatus supplier (test
laboratory client) shall provide for the Implementation Under Test (IUT) information regarding the
implementation of the protocol within the terminal, i.e. the PICS (conformant to the PICS proforma
specified in I-ETS 300 314 [4] or I-ETS 300 315 [5]) and information regarding the man-machine interface,
i.e. the PIXIT (conformant to the partial PIXIT proforma specified in I-ETS 300 318 [6] or
I-ETS 300 319 [7]).
Conformance testing involves testing both the capabilities and behaviour of an implementation and
checking what is observed both against the conformance requirements in the relevant standard (in this
case ETS 300 102-1 [1]) and what the implementor states the implementation's capabilities are.
Conformance testing does not include assessment of the performance nor the robustness or reliability of
an implementation. It cannot give judgements on the physical realization of the abstract service primitives,
how a system is implemented, how it provides any requested service, nor the environment of the protocol
implementation.
As discussed in ISO/IEC 9646-1 [8], the purpose of conformance testing is to increase the probability that
different implementations are able to interwork. However, it should be borne in mind that the complexity of
most protocols makes exhaustive testing impractical on both technical and economic grounds. Also,
testing cannot guarantee conformance to a specification since it detects errors rather than their absence.
Thus conformance testing alone cannot guarantee interworking. What it does, is give confidence that an
implementation has the required capabilities and that its behaviour conforms consistently in representative
instances of communication.
5.1 General aspects of test suites
This I-ETS presents the ATS for an ISDN terminal equipment (TE1 or TA or NT2) for ISDN layer 3 basic
or primary rate access.
The ATS is based on ETS 300 102-1 [1] and ETS 300 102-2 [2] and aligns with the principles in
ISO/IEC 9646-3 [11]. The ATS is written in TTCN according to ISO/IEC DIS 9646-3 [10].
---------------------- Page: 11 ----------------------
PSIST I-ETS 300 322:1996
Page 10
I-ETS 300 322: May 1995
The ATS is presented in five annexes:
annex A: TTCN GR for basic access;
annex B: TTCN GR for primary rate access;
annex C: TTCN MP files;
annex D: Cross reference list for basic access ATS;
annex E: Cross reference list for primary rate access ATS.
A TTCN ATS is divided into four parts as follows:
- overview part;
- declaration part;
- constraint part;
- dynamic part.
5.2 Test suite description
5.2.1 References to relevant base standard
The ATS references ETS 300 102-1 [1].
5.2.2 Test case selection and parameterization
Use of PICS and PIXIT is made for test case selection and parameterization.
5.2.3 Test method used
The selected abstract test method to which this test suite applies is the remote single layer test method.
Information on this test method is given in ISO/IEC 9646-2 [9].
5.2.4 Overall structure of the test suite
5.2.4.1 Overview part
5.2.4.1.1 Objective
This part gives some overall information about the test suite. The tables give information about the name,
reference and the test method of the test suite and describes the test cases, the test steps and the
defaults.
5.2.4.1.2 Specific name constructs
The specific name construct is explained in the relevant parts.
5.2.4.2 Declaration part
5.2.4.2.1 Objective
The aim of this part is to introduce all the type definitions needed in parts three and four. For each
variable, constant, information element, Protocol Data Unit (PDU) etc. the type is to be given (Boolean,
Integer, Octet string, Bit string, IA5 string, etc.).
5.2.4.2.2 Specific name constructs
The name of the information elements is shortened in a way as to avoid confusion.
---------------------- Page: 12 ----------------------

Page 11
I-ETS 300 322: May 1995
5.2.4.3 Constraint part
5.2.4.3.1 Objective
All the values needed for the execution of the test suite are given here or declared as parameters. PDUs
needed in the dynamic part are described with their required values and parameters.
5.2.5.3.2 Specific name constructs
The names of the PDUs have been shortened to two or three letters and a digit. Error PDUs start with
ERR and are followed by a number.
5.2.5.4 Dynamic part
5.2.5.4.1 Objective
This part describes the sequence of sending and receiving events and the linked verdicts for each test
case, test step or default. Some mechanisms have been introduced to allow the reception of particular
PDUs as described in ETS 300 196-1 [3].
5.2.5.4.2 Specific name constructs
The names of the test cases, steps or defaults start with two letters followed by five digits, as indicated
below:
Two letters:
TC Test Case
PR Preamble
PO Postamble
CS Check State
UM Unexpected Message
DF Default
First digit:
1 test case with passive IUT behaviour
2 test case with active IUT behaviour;
3 test step preamble
4 test step postamble
5 test step miscellaneous
6 default
Second and third digit:
- state in which the body of test cases start;
- state in which the preamble finishes;
- state in which postamble, miscellaneous and default start;
- the value 99 represents the possibility of starting from different states (only for test
steps and defaults).
Fourth and fifth digit:
- continuous number.

element 1: ISDN3 = Name of the test suite;
element 2: PS = Test case with passive IUT behaviour;
AC = Test case with active IUT behaviour;
PR = Preamble;
PO = Postamble;
MS = Miscellaneous;
DF = Default;
element 3: Uxx = same meaning as the second and third digits in the test name;
UAL = is identical to 99;
element 4: V = Valid;
I = Inopportune;
S = Syntactically Invalid;
element 5: two digits represent a timer (e.g. 02 = T302);
two letters represent a PDU (e.g. PG = Progress).
element 6: N = test purpose of the test case is described in NET 3;
O = the test has been created by the European CTS group.
