Collisions between wind turbine blades and poultry have been a significant factor in public opposition to the development of the wind energy industry. To this end, a renewable energy company has developed the Identi-Flight smart device, which will be integrated into the Top of the World wind project in Wyoming, USA, as part of a bird conservation plan.
The system combines artificial intelligence with high-precision optical technology to detect the distance of birds from wind turbines and prevent them from colliding with the rotating blades of the wind turbines. Wind turbines kill thousands of bird species each year, including some endangered species. These deaths have fueled public opposition to the deployment of renewable energy. The Identi-Flight tower detects birds in flight within a 1 km radius and automatically detects their species within seconds. If the speed andthe bird's flight path indicates a collision risk, the instrument can stop the corresponding wind turbine within 30 seconds.
