[Autohome?Industry]?On August 5, Mercedes-Benz and CATL announced that they will deepen their cooperation in the field of power battery technology. To support the large-scale electrification of the Mercedes-Benz model range, CATL will provide advanced battery cells, modules and systems that meet carbon-neutral standards.
The content of the agreement covers power battery technology in various areasaines, including the supply of cells and modules for passenger car products, the supply of overall battery systems for light commercial vehicle products and innovative technical indicators. In addition, CATL will also provide a CTP (module-less battery pack) design for certain projects, eliminating the need for traditional battery modules and integrating the cells directly into the battery pack. Battery cells form the heart of the battery system and have a key impact on the performance, range and lifespan of electric vehicles. The lithium battery technology jointly developed by the two parties will be used in new models launched by Mercedes-Benz in the coming years. R&D goals include shortening development cycles, increasing battery life by increasing energy density andique and reduction of charging times. It is reported that the EQS pure electric luxury sedan equipped with CATL battery modules will be delivered in 2021. Its cruising range will exceed 700 kilometers (WLTP standard), and the charging speed is twice as fast as the models existing. In addition to new cars, Mercedes-Benz also attaches great importance to the carbon neutrality goal of its passenger car product line and hopes to promote the transformation of travel methods towards carbon neutrality. To this end, CATL will use renewable energy sources such as wind power, solar power and hydropower in the production of batteries. Carbon-neutral production of battery cells alone can reduce the carbon footprint of the entire battery by more than 30%. Earlier this year, the two sides jointly launched a pilot project using technologyblockchain technology, which will make the climate-damaging gases produced and the proportion of raw materials recycled in the battery supply chain more transparent. In the future, both parties will further reduce their overreliance on raw material extraction through battery recycling. The cooperation between Mercedes-Benz and CATL will further promote the localization and industrial development of German lithium-ion batteries. As construction of the CATL plant in Thuringia progresses, Mercedes-Benz has further increased the localized sourcing rate of its supply chain. However, Mercedes-Benz will also purchase power battery cells and battery packs from different partners in the global market, to build a balanced and competitive supplier portfolio. In the future, Mercedes-Benz will deploy a power battery production network ins nine factories around the world. The location of power batteries is also an important factor in its electrification strategy.Editor's Summary:
The cooperation between Mercedes-Benz and CATL can be considered a strong alliance, which has improved the efficiency of automobile manufacturers from production to supply through research and development. For electric vehicles, only by continuously improving battery technology can they meet the needs of more and more consumers. The combination of Mercedes-Benz and CATL lithium batteries could lead to a boom in luxury pure electric vehicles. (Text/Car at home? Weng Meng)
